It is of custom that Annie Leibovitz photograph before Oscar night the nominees. This year, she decided to pair the actors with their director. You can see all the pictures on Vanity Fair's website.
Since Leibovitz couldn't photograph Christopher Nolan with the late Heath Ledger, she did a photo montage of a picture of Ledger taken in New York city in 2005 and a picture of Nolan taken in Los Angeles in 2008.
