The winners of the 52nd annual World Press Photo contest, which aims to support professional press photography on an international scale, were announced february 13 in Amsterdam. The Gardian presents a selection of the winners.
Photographer Franck Robinchon won third prize in the sports action singles field with this picture of Alexis Copello of Cuba competing during the men's triple jump at the Beijing Olympics, 18 August 2008
The general news singles category was won by the Brazilian photographer Luiz Vasconcelos, of Jornal A Critica/Zuma Press, showing a woman who tries to stop the forced eviction of her people in Manaus, Brazil, on 10 March 2008
First prize in the contemporary issues stories was won by the Mexican photographer Carlos Cazalis, of Corbis, showing a homeless person in Sao Paolo, Brazil
This picture by the Polish photographer Tomasz Gudzowaty, called Your Gallery, showing a child jockey in Mongolia, won third prize in sports features singles
Chinese photographer Chen Qinggang won first prize in the spot news singles category for "Rescue troops carry earthquake survivor, Beichuan County, China, 14 May"
This picture by Walter Astrada, taken on 17 January 2008, shows a Kenyan boy screaming as he sees a policeman with a baton approaching the door of his home in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. Astrada's series in Nairobi won first prize in the spot news singles category
