Beatriz Milhazes graduated in 1982 from the School of Visual Arts, Parque Lage, Brazil.
Her work uses elements of Brazilian cultural imagery and western modernism, creating abstract shapes often influenced by the contours and colours of flora and fauna.
In 2005, Milhazes was commissioned to create work for the Gloucester Road tube station as part of the Platform for Art programme, and has exhibited many times in the UK and across Europe, America and Asia.
In 2007, Milhazes was commissioned to make a site-specific work for Tate Modern restaurant. The title of the work, Guanabara, which combines geometric and organic motifs, refers to Guanabara Bay, one of the most celebrated views in Rio de Janeiro. A solo show at the James Cohan Gallery, New York opens in October 2008. (BOP)
