That would be because the Dutch East India Company imported many tons of blue and white porcelain from China, and their potters, most famously those of Delft, set up a huge industry making cheaper knock-offs of blue and white earthenware. There was a huge market, all of europe wanted china-ware, and only the rich could have the real thing.
I love it too. Chinese pots were often mended with drilled holes, wire, and lacquer. This is very much in the spirit... Maybe there should be a youtube to show the jangling tingling walk?!
