Shelley Adler’s paintings the face is a springboard to a luminous and freeform tableau. Adler explores nuances of emotion through colour and expression; by extension she questions ways of looking and the act of painting. With expressive brushstrokes and vibrant planes of colour, Adler distills an image into an elemental and iconic presence. These considerations are delicately balanced to reflect a deep humanism, so that the faces have both eccentric and realistic qualities.
