Anthony Lister (1980 – present) is an Australian-born painter and Installation artist. He has been featured in exhibitions in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, as well as had solo shows in New York City and London, England. Lister was born in Mexico, and later married. He graduated from the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane in 2001.
Lister's work suggest influences from a number of areas and genres, including street art, expressionism, pop art, and contemporary drug culture. It often deals with subject matter from popular culture, reflecting the less glamorous aspects. He occasionally draws from television and such themes as the "misguided role models" that result. He has said that "Australians are raised by Americans on TV" and also that "TV is the contemporary mode of meditation" Lister's own children have had a profound impact on the way he creates art; he has been inspired by "watching what [his] own children are watching on tv" and "what they're bombarded with". He has often stated that he is not trying to make a statement with his work but to reflect the world around him.
He often has recurring themes in his art but probably most famous for his Monkey (Chi-Chi)& Superhero paintings.(Wikipedia)

I'm so excited to see Mr. Lister here! I went to an exhibition of his many years ago in Brisbane and have a book of his work right next to me as we speak (Places & Things). His talent is so diverse, so it's funny to think that many Brisbane people will only know him by the traffic switchboxes he painted from 1999 to 2002!
ReplyDeleteI just discovered Lister's work and I find it very inspiring and beautiful... I'm glad you appreciate his work too!
ReplyDeleteI actually don't know about the switchboxes and I shall look into it! You have enticed my curiosity!
Thanks =)
