Wow. There is so much to say about Dan Wiz that I thought of doing multiple posts on him. Why? Because he paints on canvas, but also does street art and he does both very cleverly. His street art projects are intelligent and thoughtful. But there is so much to see, I really suggest you go on and visit his website for an in depth look at his work. What I show here is really just the surface.
Dan Witz was born in 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. He now lives in New york. Since the 80’s, famous for his well known participation in the Street Art Movement, he looks for night scenes, and depicts a savage and fascinating world. On one side, his oil paintings draw a very quite picture of the suburbs through the absence of the soul. On the other side he shows bunches of people or animals, disshumanized, alienated, insane as if they were run by battery. Between presence and absence, his paitings always deal with the identity of human beings in modern societies. (Addict Gallery)
And his street art too. This is how he explains a recent project, called Kilroy Variations 2008. Ugly New Buildings., he did in the streets of NY :
In the past few years much of my neighborhood in Brooklyn has been torn down to make way for luxury housing. For better or worse it's a whole new street-scape out here. Personally, I can't say I like the new modern architecture very much, it's sterile and so arrogantly disconnected with its surroundings sometimes it seems like giant alien space ships have landed in the night. But, at the very least, there's some interesting new textures and surfaces to interact with. These are photo-based, heavily re-painted stickers, mounted on plastic and glued to the walls of the Ugly New Buildings. I hit the Lower East Side and East Village in Manhattan, and Bushwick, Dumbo, Greenpoint and Williamsburg out here in Brooklyn.
And here are some pictures of this project :
Really, I am not talking nor showing a quarter of his massive, impressive work. Go visit his website...
